John Tomlinson is an artist of drawing with a professional practice spanning almost 40 years. During the past several years he
has combined his drawings with animation in digital video tocreate narrative motion drawings with soundworks. One such work, "
small gestures Modes of Escape", was presented at the DIGit Media Arts Exposition in Narrowsburg, NY, in August 2006, and at
the Black Bear Film Festival in Milford, PA, in October 2006. (This video is accessible from the Motion Drawing Video page)
His works in progress are short motion drawing digital videos with soundworks with the theme of the passing of time, small
tribulations of life and other varied themes of human interaction.
Exhibitions
He has exhibited his paintings and drawings in New York City at 55 Mercer Gallery in SoHo and at The Painting Center in
Chelsea and throughout the U.S.,including at the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance in Narrowsburg, NY, and has received reviews in
several publications, including Arts Magazine and The New York Times.
His 1980s portrait works were exhibited in a show of portraits and self-portraits by 80 artists at the Brattleboro Museum & Art
Center in Vermont entitled "As Others See Us", from November 2008 through February 2009.
His one-person show of drawings, motion drawing videos and soundworks, "So Much to Say [not enough time] " was at the
Alliance Gallery of the Delaware Valley Arts Center in Narrowsburg, NY., from June 12 through July 4, 2009, coinciding
with the opening of the 6th annual DIGit Media Arts Exposition.
Tomlinson received a Fellowship for Visual Artists and Craftspersons grant from the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance in 2005.
Teaching
He was professor of drawing in the Fine Arts Department of Parsons the New School for Design from 1980 to 2001.
He has been the director of the New York Studio Residency Program of the 41 U.S. and Canadian colleges of the
Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design since 1992.
Community
John is a founding member of both the DIGit Media Arts Exposition in Narrowsburg, NY and the Barryville Area Arts
Association. He is also a founding board member of the Upper Delaware Preservation Coalition (UDPC), an environmental
advocacy group whose mission is to protect and preserve the Upper Delaware River Valley of New York State and
Pennsylvania.
Education
John Tomlinson was born and educated in Boston and has lived in New York since 1961. He has a Bachelor of Fine Arts
degree from the Cooper Union School of Art.
